What Nameservers do I need to point my domain at?

dns.uk.webtapestry.net (217.151.96.2)
dns.nl.webtapestry.net (217.151.103.2)

What IPS tag should I transfer my .uk domain to?

When transferring .uk domain names to our control, you should request the current Tagholder to transfer the domain name to the WEBTAPESTRY tag.

How do I change the Registrant of my domain name?

For .uk domains, you will need to arrange this directly with Nominet and they will charge a fee to do this. Their website at
http://www.nominet.org.uk/ contains more details of how to do this.

For .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz and .eu domains then we will arrange this for you. You will need to contact our support team with details of the new registrant to proceed.

I have received a letter from Domain Registry of America. Is this a scam?

Yes, this is a scam. You absolutely do not need to send money to Domain Registry of America, you can continue to renew your domain with Web Tapestry at our lower rates. Whilst they make it appear that you have to renew your domain with them, this is simply not the case.

What are your POP3 and SMTP servers?

Our POP3 (Incoming) mail server is pop3.webtapestry.net and our SMTP (Outgoing) mail server is smtp.webtapestry.net.

Some ISPs may block access to third party SMTP servers and so to bypass this you should change the SMTP server port in your mail software from port 25 to port 587. This can be found under the Advanced tab in Outlook Express. It is also usually a good idea to tick the My server requires authentication box.

You can only use our SMTP servers if you have a POP3 account with us, or if you connect to the internet using a Web Tapestry dialup or broadband account.

What does "550 relaying blocked" mean when I try to send e-mail?

Our Outgoing (SMTP) mail server requires some kind of authentication of who you are, to ensure only authorised users can use our mail server. This error message means you have not authenticated. There are two ways of authenticating.

1) When you download mail, you then have a window of a few minutes to send e-mail using our SMTP server provided you do not disconnect from the internet in between. In Outlook Express, the "Send and Receive" button does this the other way around. However, if you then click "Send and Receive" again, it should work OK.

2) In Outlook Express, select the 'Accounts...' option from the 'Tools' menu. Click the 'Mail' tab, select your Web Tapestry mail account and click the 'Properties' button. Choose the 'Servers' tab and ensure the box labelled "My server requires authentication" is ticked. Click 'OK'. Click 'Close'.

What can I do about the spam I am receiving?

Unsolicited e-mail (Spam) is an increasing problem on the Internet, and much of this e-mail can be quite offensive. We do have a limited spam filter, but we are reluctant to expand this so as to avoid dropping any genuine e-mail. You can install Spam filters on your local computer and this is usually the best way to combat unwanted e-mails. Many of our customers have recommended
MailWasher as an excellent desktop spam filter. More information about Spam can be found at www.spamprimer.com.

My outgoing e-mail is slow. What can I do?

Our email service is a high-performance system designed for speed and efficiency. Some consumer branded providers may restrict your usual access to it, by using a system called proxying. To get around this restriction, we have enabled authenticated connections on port 587.

To configure Outlook Express to use this, you should select 'Tools' then 'Accounts'. Select your mail account from the list and choose 'Properties'. Select the 'Servers' tab and change the 'Outgoing e-mail server' setting to 'smtp.webtapestry.net'. Tick the box next to 'My server requires authentication'. On the 'Advanced' tab, change the Outgoing mail server port to '587'. Click 'Apply' and then 'OK' to save these settings.

Do I need to display any banners or any pop-ups?

Web Tapestry provide a commercial web hosting service which our customers pay for. As such, we do not require you to display any banners or otherwise link back to Web Tapestry. Nor will we force pop-up advertisements on to your website.

How do I upload my files?

Unless you have ordered FrontPage extensions, you should use an FTP client for transferring files. Some versions of MS Windows have an FTP client built in to it, but you may prefer to use a third party FTP client such as
WS FTP, CuteFTP or CoffeeCup. Some website building software, such as DreamWeaver, have their own FTP client built in. As these are Third Party programs, we are unable to provide any direct support for their use.

If you selected FrontPage extensions when ordering your web hosting, you should use the Publish Web feature of FrontPage to upload your website and should not use FTP.

You should upload your files in to the /public_html directory to ensure they are visible on the web. On Linux based hosting accounts, CGI scripts uploaded into the /cgi-bin directory should be called in a browser using http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-yourusername/.

I bought FrontPage extensions with my hosting. Can I use FTP also?

When you request FrontPage Extensions with your webhosting account, you should always use the Publish Web feature of the FrontPage program to upload your files due to the way FrontPage is intrinsically linked to your website. By using FTP or anything else, it is possible that you may 'break' the extensions and cause the extensions to stop working.

What filename should I use for the default page?

Our Linux servers will search for one of the following files to be the default page: index.html, index.htm, index.php, index.cgi, index.pl, index.shtml, default.htm, default.html and default.php. Our Windows 2003 servers will search for default.htm, default.asp, index.htm, default.aspx, index.html and index.asp.

How do I administer a MySQL database?

We have installed PHPMyAdmin to enable our Linux customers to use a web based interface to administer their MySQL databases. You can either click the link in the Control Panel or visit http://www.yourdomain.com/admin-mysql/ and enter your MySQL username and password when requested. This may be different to your FTP and e-mail username/password.

How can I enable the register_globals setting for my PHP scripts?

register_globals is a feature which was disabled by default for security reasons with effect from PHP-4.1.0. An explanation for this is available at the
PHP website under the "Security: New Input Mechanism" section.

However, certain websites will still require these features and so they can be enabled on a per website basis by uploading a text file called '.htaccess' into the /public_html directory of your website with the following line:

php_flag register_globals on

How do I create a Password Protected directory on my website?

Presently, we can only offer this for websites hosted on Linux servers but their may be alternative ways using ASP scripts on Windows 2003 accounts.

Password protection can be done using .htaccess and .htpasswd files and our tutorial can be found
here.

I have installed a new Perl script and I cannot get it to work. What's wrong?

This applies particularly to Perl scripts on Linux servers. When uploading a script to our servers, you should ensure that you upload it using ASCII mode in your FTP client and that you set the file permissions (CHMOD) permissions to 755 (all executable). Most FTP clients can handle this.

You should ensure the top line of your script reads '#!/usr/bin/perl'.

You should ensure the file is called something.pl or something.cgi.

What is the path to perl and sendmail?

The path to perl on our Linux servers is '/usr/bin/perl' and you should ensure the top line of your CGI script reads '#!/usr/bin/perl'. The path to sendmail on our Linux servers is '/usr/sbin/sendmail'. You do not need the path to perl on our Windows 2003 servers and Sendmail is not available on our Windows 2003 servers.

What is the robots.txt file for in my public_html directory?

The robots.txt file gives hints to search engine spiders and the like which will visit your site frequently to keep their indexes updated. This is as part of the 'Robots Exclusion Standard', which you can read about at
www.robotstxt.org.

Do you have any e-mail components for Windows 2003?

All of our Windows 2003 hosting accounts come with CDONTS support by default for use with e-mail forms in your ASP scripts. Whilst we cannot provide any support for this, you can find more information about
How To Use CDONTS to Collect and Mail Information From a User on Microsoft's website.

What modem settings do I need?

When configuring your ADSL router, you will need to ensure the following are set:

VPI : 0
VCI : 38
Encapsulation Type : VC MUX
Protocol : PPPoA
Modulation : G.DMT

We will provide you with a username and password when you have ordered the service.
